Deep Retrofit Mews, Notting Hill, London
The project involved a careful low energy retrofit of an existing mews house in a conservation area in Notting Hill, West London. Alongside significantly upgrading the thermal performance the design proposed extensive layout reconfigurations including the insertion of a generously proportioned timber and glazed stair space that allowed natural light to flood deep into the interiors.
To limit embodied carbon expenditure and reduce cost we were careful to ‘conserve’ and avoid the unnecessary replacement of the existing structure, adapting and re-using elements or materials as much as possible. Attention to detail with regard to thermal and moisture issues is critical on low energy retrofits thus we used a combination of both modern and lo-tech traditional approaches to achieve the performance requirements and maintain buildability at a reasonable cost. Exposed load bearing oak was throughout used for the internal wall framing and the beautifully designed structural plywood sheathed staircase was clad with solid oak boarding to match.
