Eldon Road, Kensington, London
A refurbishment, extension and remodel of a grand Grade 2 Victorian house in Kensington.
The structural strategy was low key and subtle to work around the historic fabric. Thus we opened up, lowered and extended the existing lower-ground floor, re-supporting the building on discreet new steel framing and foundations to facilitate a more open plan layout. This space links to the garden via the new extension (with a terrace above) through a stepped external courtyard.
The external area incorporates below ground storage cupboards and has been beautifully finished in exposed slim profiled Petersen brickwork.
The existing timber roof structure has all been extensively remodelled to accommodate a new bedroom suite, an extended stair flight and a home office space tucked within the carefully modified existing front gable.
