Qatar Foundation Headquarters and Strategic Studies Centre, Doha

Role : Structural Design Engineer at Ove Arup

Two headquarters buildings for the Qatar Foundation in Doha's Education City, built between 2012 and 2017 Designed by Ken Koolhaas’ firm, Office for Metropolitan Architecture (OMA), one building is a 57-meter tall, cube-shaped structure building features a facade of precast white concrete with both perforated and continuous slot windows. Contrasting this is a dramatic low top-heavy 2/3 storey building which houses conference facilities and creates an open/ shaded undercroft.

David co-led the structural design of both building structures. For both buildings the structures achieved large column free spans or cantilevers through the use of large steel sections encased in concrete. The upper stories of the cube were hung to create a dramatic column free slot around the entire facade located two thirds the way up the elevation. The engineering scope included the design of vast areas of underground service and parking structures.
