Crossrail (The Elizabeth Line)

Role: Team leader - Tunnel network damage assesment and mitigation, Ove Arup

The Elizabeth line (Crossrail) was, at the time, Europe’s largest construction project with a total budget of around £14·8 billion. The design integrated new infrastructure with existing London transport, focusing on passenger flow, efficiency, and architectural innovation. Key aspects include architecturally distinct, clutter-free underground stations that use curved forms to guide passengers, longer trains and platforms to handle higher passenger capacity, and a line-wide approach to common components. Major engineering challenges were overcome through innovations such as the use of state-of-the-art geological modelling to map complex fault lines, ingenious construction techniques for underground stations that minimise disruption, and support structures that allowed for extensive above-ground development. 

For over 3 year period a David led a 15 the person team dealing with damage assessment and mitigation for the tunnel network at Arup. The role involved extensive geotechnical analysis, strong strategic planning skills and ability to communicate and coordinate information with multiple stakeholders.
